The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become,
and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth,
and his heart was filled with pain.
So the Lord said,
“I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth —
men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—
for I am grieved that I have made them.”
Genesis 6:5-7
Matthew 24:37-39

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight
and was full of violence.
God saw how corrupt the earth had become,
for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
So God said to Noah,
“I am going to put an end to all people,
for the earth is filled with violence because of them.
I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.”
Genesis 6:11-13

Every living thing that moved on the earth perished—
birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth,
and all mankind.
Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.
Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out;
men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground
and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth.
Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 9:6

As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.”
They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city,
with a tower that reaches to the heavens,
so that we may make a name for ourselves
and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
But the Lord came down to see the city
and the tower that the men were building.
The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language
they have begun to do this,
then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let us go down and confuse their language
so they will not understand each other.”
So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,
and they stopped building the city.
That is why it was called Babel—
because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.
From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
Genesis 11:2-9

The Lord had said to Abram,
“Leave your country, your people and your father’s household
and go to the land I will show you.

I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
Genesis 12:1-3

As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,
“I know what a beautiful woman you are.
When the Egyptians see you, they will say,
‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.
Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake
and my life will be spared because of you.”
When Abram came to Egypt,
the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman.
And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh,
and she was taken into his palace.
He treated Abram well for her sake,
and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys,
menservants and maidservants, and camels.
But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household
because of Abram’s wife Sarai.
So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”he said.
“Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’
so that I took her to be my wife?
Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

then they went away.
They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions,
since he was living in Sodom.
One who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew
Genesis 14:10-13

When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive,
he called out the 318 trained men born in his household
and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

He recovered all the goods
and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions,
together with the women and the other people.

Genesis 14:18-20

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,
and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Then the Lord said to him,
“Know for certain that your descendants
will be strangers in a country not their own,
and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,
and afterward they will come out with great possessions.”
Genesis 15:12-14

The angel of the Lord also said to her:
“You are now with child and you will have a son.
You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery.
He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
Genesis 16:11-12

This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you,

and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.
For the generations to come
every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,
including those born in your household
or bought with money from a foreigner—
those who are not your offspring.
Whether born in your household or bought with your money,
they must be circumcised.
My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.
Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh,
will be cut off from his people;
he has broken my covenant.
Genesis 17:10-14

Then the Lord said,
“The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great
and their sin so grievous
that I will go down and see
if what they have done
is as bad as the outcry that has reached me.
If not, I will know.”
Genesis 18:20

Before they had gone to bed,
all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—
both young and old—surrounded the house.
They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight?
Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said,
“No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing.
Genesis 19:4-7

“Get out of our way,” they replied.
And they said, “This fellow came here as an alien,
and now he wants to play the judge!
We’ll treat you worse than them.”
They kept bringing pressure on Lot
and moved forward to break down the door.
But the men inside reached out
and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door.
Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old,
with blindness
so that they could not find the door.

The two men said to Lot,
“Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters,
or anyone else in the city who belongs to you?
Get them out of here,
because we are going to destroy this place.
The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great
that he has sent us to destroy it.”
So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law,
who were pledged to marry his daughters.
He said, “Hurry and get out of this place,
because the Lord is about to destroy the city!”
But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying,
“Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here,
or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”
Genesis 19:12-15

he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

and lived between Kadesh and Shur.
For a while he stayed in Gerar,
and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.”
Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.
But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him,

she is a married woman.”
Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said,
“Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?

I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve.
I will send wild animals against you,
and they will rob you of your children,
destroy your cattle and make you so few in number
that your roads will be deserted.
If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction
but continue to be hostile toward me,
I myself will be hostile toward you
and will afflict you for your sins seven times over.
And I will bring the sword upon you
to avenge the breaking of the covenant.’ ”
Leviticus 26:21-25

But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory.
He mustered his entire army
and marched out into the desert against Israel.

from the Arnon to the Jabbok,

Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them,
including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements.

Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”
So twelve thousand men armed for battle,
a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
Moses sent them into battle,
a thousand from each tribe,
along with Phinehas
son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary
and the trumpets for signaling.
They fought against Midian,
as the Lord commanded Moses,
and killed every man.

as the Lord your God has commanded you.
Deuteronomy 20:16-17

“See now that I myself am He!
There is no god besides me.
I put to death and I bring to life,
I have wounded and I will heal,
and no one can deliver out of my hand.
I lift my hand to heaven and declare:
As surely as I live forever,
when I sharpen my flashing sword
and my hand grasps it in judgment,
I will take vengeance on my adversaries
and repay those who hate me.
I will make my arrows drunk with blood,
while my sword devours flesh:
the blood of the slain and the captives,
the heads of the enemy leaders.”
