In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand,
along with some of the articles from the temple of God.
These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia
and put in the treasure house of his god.
Daniel 1:1-2
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
he sets up kings and deposes them.”
Daniel 2:20-21
“You looked, O king, and there before you stood a large statue—
an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance.
The head of the statue was made of pure gold,
its chest and arms of silver,
its belly and thighs of bronze,
its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay.
While you were watching, a rock was cut out,
but not by human hands.
It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay
and smashed them.”
Daniel 2:31-34
“In the time of those kings,
the God of heaven will set up a kingdom
that will never be destroyed,
nor will it be left to another people.
It will crush all those kingdoms
and bring them to an end,
but it will itself endure forever.”
Daniel 2:44
At this time some astrologers came forward and denounced the Jews.
Daniel 3:8
You have issued a decree, O king,
that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes
and all kinds of music
must fall down and worship the image of gold,
and that whoever does not fall down and worship
will be thrown into a blazing furnace.
But there are some Jews
whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—
who pay no attention to you, O king.
They neither serve your gods
nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”
Daniel 3:10-12
Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
and his attitude toward them changed.
He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual
and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army
to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
and throw them into the blazing furnace.
So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes,
were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.
The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot
that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers
who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
Daniel 3:19-22
Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement
and asked his advisers,
“Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, O king.”
He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire,
unbound and unharmed,
and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted,
“Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire,
and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them.
They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies,
nor was a hair of their heads singed;
their robes were not scorched,
and there was no smell of fire on them.
Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
who has sent his angel and rescued his servants!
They trusted in him and defied the king’s command
and were willing to give up their lives
rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
Therefore I decree Esther 8:11
that the people of any nation or language
who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,
for no other god can save in this way.”
Daniel 3:24-29
“This is the interpretation, O king,
and this is the decree the Most High has issued
against my lord the king:
You will be driven away from people
and will live with the wild animals;
you will eat grass like cattle
and be drenched with the dew of heaven.
Seven times will pass by for you
until you acknowledge
that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men
and gives them to anyone he wishes.
The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots
means that your kingdom will be restored to you
when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.
Therefore, O king, be pleased to accept my advice:
Renounce your sins by doing what is right,
and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.
It may be that then your prosperity will continue.”
Daniel 4:24-27
Twelve months later,
as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,
he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence,
by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
The words were still on his lips when a voice came from heaven,
“This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar:
Your royal authority has been taken from you.”
Daniel 4:29-31
“You will be driven away from people
and will live with the wild animals;
you will eat grass like cattle.
Seven times will pass by for you
until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign
over the kingdoms of men
and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled.
He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle.
His body was drenched with the dew of heaven
until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle
and his nails like the claws of a bird.
Daniel 4:32-33
At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar,
raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored.
Then I praised the Most High;
I honored and glorified him who lives forever.
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing.
He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back his hand or say to him:
“What have you done?”
Daniel 4:34-35
At the same time that my sanity was restored,
my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.
My advisers and nobles sought me out,
and I was restored to my throne
and became even greater than before.
Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify
the King of heaven,
because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.
And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
Daniel 4:34-37
When the Lord began to speak through Hosea,
the Lord said to him,
“Go, take to yourself an adulterous wife
and children of unfaithfulness,
because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery
in departing from the Lord.”
Hosea 1:2
Then the Lord said to Hosea,
“Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu
for the massacre at Jezreel,
and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.
In that day I will break Israel’s bow
in the Valley of Jezreel.”
Hosea 1:4-5
Then the Lord said to Hosea,
“Call her Lo-Ruhamah,
for I will no longer show love to the house of Israel,
that I should at all forgive them.
Yet I will show love to the house of Judah;
and I will save them—
not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen,
but by the Lord their God.”
Hosea 1:6-7
Then the Lord said, “Call him Lo-Ammi,
for you are not my people,
and I am not your God.
“Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore,
which cannot be measured or counted.
In the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’
The people of Judah and the people of Israel will be reunited,
and they will appoint one leader
and will come up out of the land,
for great will be the day of Jezreel.”
Hosea 1:9-11
